Live Nativity - Abiding Love Middle School Youth

The middle school youth of Abiding Love Lutheran Church presented a Live Christmas Nativity for our congregation and the community on December 7, 2008, from 6 - 8:00 p.m. The attendees were led through four narrated scenes on their way to Bethlehem where they found the baby Jesus in a stable and lying in a manger. The live nativity included two horses and several goats - a BIG hit with the children (and adults!). The youth dressed up in period costumes and presented the Christmas story for two hours; what a way to prepare your hearts this Christmas season! Thank you, middle school youth, for witnessing to us that evening at Abiding Love!

March 9th ROCK meeting

The senior high ROCK (Relient On Christ the King) had their every-other-weekly meeting on March 9th! For this get-together, the coordinators planned a "Destination: Unknown" event. So after some chit chat in the youth room, we all piled into cars and soon found ourselves in the Covington parking lot.

Everyone lined up on the track pretending to stage a marathon and in fact, we did end up racing. The winners had an illegal handicap. Those of us that did wait for "go" and not "ready, set" soon joined the others though, and we all participated in a discussion that compared and contrasted racing to our life with Christ.

You see, in a race, some people are faster and some are slower, but in the end everyone crosses the finish line. Alternatively, God doesn't care who finishes first, or who strays off occasionally, as long as they get to heaven. Luke 15:7 "In the same way, there is more joy in heaven over one lost sinner who repents and returns to God than over ninety-nine others who are righteous and haven’t strayed away!"

God seemed to think that we weren't in the best place for a discussion like this, though, and sent us off to Culver's to continue with the rain in our wake. Also, thanks to Nader for the ice cream! See y'all!

The Church Under the Bridge

This Sunday March 9th, the ROCK will be attending the Church Under the Bridge. We will worship with the people living on the streets of Austin. Please join us at our church parking lot at 9:00AM sharp.

This will be a wonderful experience for us all. The R.O.C.K. will be meeting at 6:00PM on March 9th for another Destination Unknown! Last time we surprised you with a trip to Mount Bonnell. Who knows where we’ll go this time?! Bring a friend and experience a truly spiritual and interesting event.

Our Dinner/Movie/Auction night is coming up SOON! We need your help to make this a successful fundraiser! Please be at the church by 5:30PM on March 16th to serve the dinner. We are asking you to wear “formal” black and white attire.

Maundy Thursday will be planned by and led by the senior high youth. If you are available to serve with us, please let Janea know. allcyouth@austin.rr.com

On February 24th the ROCK will be hosted by Kim and Tim Sump at their home. Please check with Emily Hohertz or Kim or Tim for directions. Also, if you have anything you would like to have included in the business agenda, let Emily or Janea know.

The Austin Crop Walk is scheduled for March 2nd. Please let us know if you are interested in joining our group in an effort to stop world hunger.

Our ROCK members will be worshiping at the Church Under the Bridge on March 9th. This is a Mission Possible program where our youth can visit and worship with the people living on the streets of Austin.

Please sign up today to help with our summer camp fundraiser on March 16th. We need as many youth and parents as possible to make this Dinner/Movie/Silent Auction a success! Call Janea today!

Destination Unknown!

The next R.O.C.K. meeting will be on February 10th at 6:00PM. This will be a “Destination Unknown” meeting so plan on leaving the church on a “field trip”. You just won’t know where until you get here.

On February 24th the ROCK will be hosted by Katie Carswell and held at her home. Please check with Emily Hohertz or Katie for directions. Also, if you have anything you would like to have included in the business agenda, let Emily or Janea know. Please remember to turn in your money and final orders for the Candle Fundraiser to Janea Escobedo no later than Wed., Feb. 20th! 50% of all your sales will go toward paying for your summer camp.

The ROCK will be joining with Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church for a 30 Hour Famine on Friday February 22nd. This will be a lock-in with many activities. If you’re interested in participating in this, please contact Janea to find out what you need to do.

Next Meeting and Chili Cookoff!

On Sunday, January 27th from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M., the ROCK will meet upstairs for the second youth group meeting of the year! The activity will be a surprise, so DON’T miss it!

On Saturday, February 2nd at 5:30 P.M., the ROCK will be hosting its Chili Cook Off on in the Activity Center. Please contact Janea if you can attend and join us in a FUN skit! We need as many ROCK members as possible to attend.

January 13th: The next ROCK meeting will be held at the home of Andie Jones on January 13th! This will be our first meeting of the year and we will be going over some plans for the upcoming months. If you’ve been wondering what’s coming up and where you can jump in, now’s your time to find out! January 19-21: The Great Circus Caper Mystery Event will be held January 19th thru the 21st at Forest Glen Christian Camp in Huntsville Texas. All high school students are encouraged to attend this FUN and CRAZY weekend and find out “Who Dun It”! We will also be offering a ropes course, Bible Study and Worship and plenty of time to enjoy the beautiful east Texas scenery! If you haven’t signed up, call TODAY to reserve your space! 892-4040.

January 27th: From 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M., the ROCK will meet at the church for the second youth group meeting of the year! We will be surprising you with a “What Are They Up To?” theme! You have to come to the meeting to find out!

February 2nd: At 5:30 P.M., the ROCK will be hosting our traditional Abiding Love Chili Cook Off! All high school students are needed for judging the chili and performing in a short skit. This is a wonderful time for us to enjoy some GREAT homemade chili with our church family and to have some fun with a skit. If you can participate in the skit, please email Janea at allcyouth@austin.rr.com know so she can cast all of you as characters.

Forest Glen Retreat / Work Camp / Synod Gathering

TIME IS RUNNING OUT… for all senior high students to sign up for our retreat on January 19th thru 21st! If you want to learn more about what leadership qualities you have, or if you want to start developing new skills, this is your chance! Don’t miss a great time with your friends. We will be traveling EAST to Forest Glen Retreat for a new experience with old (and new) friends! Please contact Janea, if you’re interested in going!

WORK CAMP SIGN UP… we still have a few spots left for you to sign up for our annual Group work camp trip. We will be going to Commerce, Colorado next year and want you to join us! Let Janea know if your interested and we’ll get you signed up!

Skit Preview!
The Sr. High ROCK Youth Group would like to invite the congregation to watch the FIRST showing of the skit they will be performing for the Southwestern Texas Synod Sr. High Gathering. This skit will show how hard it is to battle with the temptations in the world today and how Jesus is always there to rescue us when we call His name. We will be performing for you on Thursday, December 27th at 7:00PM in the Sanctuary. This will be a very short skit and we hope you can all make it by to see us.

Sr. High Youth Gathering

The annual Sr. High Youth Gathering will be held in Kerrville December 28 thru the 30th. Our group will be opening the gathering on Friday with a skit showing the temptations in our world. We hope to perform the short skit for our congregation on the 27th of December at 7:00PM in the Sanctuary. Watch for more information in the next newsletter.
